Selection Criteria
PSYCHIATRISTS
Specific:
Psychiatrists should be medical practitioners whose names are on the roll
of psychiatrists kept by the Medical Board of Western Australia. Preference
will be given to those psychiatrists who are Fellows of the Royal Australian
and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
Other relevant criteria:
- High level communication skills, including the capacity to relate
effectively to different ages, ethnic background or gender
- Demonstrated capacity for impartial and balanced decision making
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary
team
- Understanding of the nature and complexity of mental illness
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1996
- A commitment to dealing with those appearing before the Board with dignity
LEGAL PRACTITIONERS
Specific:
Legal Practitioners must be admitted as legal practitioners in Western
Australia, and have relevant legal experience.
Other relevant criteria:
- High level communication skills, including the capacity to relate
effectively to different ages, ethnic background or gender
- Knowledge of the rules of natural justice (procedural fairness)
- Demonstrated capacity for impartial and balanced decision making
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary
team
- Understanding of the nature and complexity of mental illness
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1996
- A commitment to dealing with those appearing before the Board with dignity
COMMUNITY MEMBERS
Specific:
Community members are to be neither psychiatrists nor legal practitioners
and are selected from the general public.
Other relevant criteria:
- High level communication skills, including the capacity to relate
effectively to different ages, ethnic background or gender
- Demonstrated capacity for impartial and balanced decision making
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a team environment
- Understanding of the nature and complexity of mental illness
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1996
- A commitment to dealing with those appearing before the Board with dignity
